Angelina Jolie visits Venezuelan refugees

US actress Angelina Jolie has visited a refugee shelter in Peru from Venezuela. As an envoy of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, the 43-year-old informed himself on Monday in Tumbes on the border with Ecuador on the situation of migrants.

“I want people to know that you have not left Venezuela because you want a better job,” she said at the start of her weekend visit to an emergency shelter in Lima. “The situation is much more serious.”

Faced with hunger, violence and political oppression, over 2.3 million people have fled Venezuela in recent years, according to the United Nations. Nearly 500,000 Venezuelans have sought refuge in Peru. The government in Caracas condemned Jolie’s visit to the refugees. President Nicolás Maduro doubts the high number of migrants and keeps saying that Venezuelans are treated badly abroad.

“This news comes from the right media. So they do not have to speak of the Central American migrants and the “love” with which they are received in the US, “said the chairman of the pro-government constituent assembly of Venezuela, Diosdado Cabello. Currently, thousands of migrants are moving from Central America to the United States. US President Donald Trump has threatened to stop them if necessary with the help of the military on the border.
